Details
SEMA’s work on Wekiva Section 7A came unexpectedly, FDOT’s District 5 was faced with a contractor default when the originally awarded contractor ceased business operations. FDOT in conjunction with Zurich (the surety holder) solicited SEMA to provide a qualifications package, which led to a shortlisting and eventual competitive price proposal. SEMA was the successful bidder and entered into a contract directly with Zurich. Due to the default, FDOT lost several months for the re-procurement of the project, realizing time was of the essence, SEMA accelerated & optimized the project schedule. Not only was the time lost recuperated, we were ultimately able to deliver the project three months ahead of the original schedule established by the first contractor. This is a testament to our values: we were hungry enough to take on this unique challenge, humble enough to ensure we did not over promise and under-deliver, tough enough to accelerate the schedule in the midst of a pandemic and smart enough to find the needed efficiencies within the schedule to deliver the project ahead of schedule.
Major Achievements
SEMA was able to deliver this project ahead of FDOT’s original schedule, after losing three months for the re-procurement of the project. Working directly for a surety isn’t something that happens every day. As the original project scope came to an end, FDOT was so pleased with SEMA’s work, that we were awarded a $6M change order to realign a section of roadway and improve the entrance to one of the local neighborhoods.
