Interstate 10 Eastbound Truck Climbing Lane Improvement Project

Location

Yucaipa, CA

Owner

San Bernardino County Transportation Authority

Project Size

$25M

Details

SEMA’s work in Yucaipa, CA is helping San Bernardino County Transportation Authority improve flow and safety on busy Interstate 10. The project extends the existing Truck Climbing Lane by approximately 3 miles to further separate trucks and other slow-moving vehicles from faster moving vehicles through steep hills along the freeway. Rip rap installation beneath the bridge widening portion of the project will reinforce the structure against seasonal flows from Wilson Creek.

Major Achievements

SEMA has partnered with DBE subcontractor Cooper Engineering on this project in which completion of the subcontracted work is forecasted to nearly double SBCTA’s DBE goal for the project from 23% to 45%. Additionally, delegating management of the major concrete paving and concrete barrier scopes of work to Cooper permits SEMA to concurrently execute the other major earthwork, drainage and bridge widening components of the project. The partnership and efficient allocation of resources has reduced the schedule risk to SBCTA in that the project is remaining on time for completion. An additional major achievement to date has been the safe performance of a 25 foot excavation cut in limited access underneath the existing freeway and against Wilson Creek.

Savings

On bid day, SEMA’s price to perform the work saved SBCTA $1.9M compared to the 2nd place bidder. In the field, SEMA and SBCTA were able to partner on resolution of a differing site condition regarding the presence geogrid material in the roadway section on a large section of the project. SBCTA permitted SEMA to perform the work in an efficient manner and re-utilize material excavated during the removal that in turn preserved the project schedule. As a result of the efficiency in resolving the issue, a critical delay to the project was mitigated, which saved SBCTA funds.
