  • Role and Responsibilities

As Owner and Founder of SEMA, Tom Ames built the company from the ground up, transforming it from a small subcontractor in 1991 into an industry-leading general contractor specializing in heavy civil infrastructure. His vision and leadership established SEMA’s culture of innovation, efficiency, and accountability, positioning it as one of the most respected contractors in the industry.

Under Tom’s leadership, SEMA expanded from a mass grading and wet utilities subcontractor into a full-service general contractor, integrating earthwork, utilities, concrete structures, and alternative delivery methods for unmatched efficiency. His strategic partnership with Brad Spies in 1995 helped shape SEMA into a pioneer in infrastructure construction, setting the foundation for its national growth.

Though he has transitioned from daily operations to strategic oversight, Tom remains deeply involved in SEMA’s success. He oversees the nationwide fleet of more than 800 pieces of heavy machinery, manages key financial and bonding relationships, and provides guidance on major business decisions. With a strong presence in the field, he mentors personnel, offering wisdom and hands-on leadership to ensure SEMA continues to uphold the highest standards of quality and efficiency.

Tom’s unwavering leadership reinforces SEMA's mission, the Project and the People - safely, sustainably, with high quality, and profitably.
