  • Role and Responsibilities

As District Vice President of SEMA’s Special Projects Group, Mark Mac Donald, PE, provides strategic leadership across multiple districts, where his expertise is critical to delivering safe, efficient, and high-quality results. Reporting to Bob Stevens, Senior Vice President of Texas and the Special Projects Group, Mark oversees some of SEMA’s most complex mega-projects nationwide, with a particular focus on large, signature structural works. He blends technical excellence with strategic vision—optimizing design, improving construction efficiency, and integrating new technologies - while remaining instrumental in risk assessment, stakeholder collaboration, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

Mark’s civil engineering foundation is rooted in structural works, strengthened by leadership roles on some of North America’s most iconic and technically demanding bridges. He held senior management positions on the $2.0B San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge in California (Bid-Build), the $3.14B Tappan Zee Bridge replacement in New York (Design-Build), and the $6B (CDN) Gordie Howe International Bridge connecting Detroit and Windsor (PPP/Design-Build). These experiences sharpened his expertise in constructability, large-scale structural design, and the seamless integration of engineering and construction processes to achieve optimal outcomes.

In addition to leading major initiatives, Mark serves as SEMA’s national in-house structural authority, providing technical guidance and innovative solutions for the company’s most challenging bridge and heavy civil projects. His leadership ensures every project aligns with The Project and The People - delivered safely, sustainably, with high quality, and profitably. Advancing SEMA’s mission, he fulfills its brand promise — SEMA, More to Look Forward To — by shaping world-class bridge solutions that leave lasting value for communities.

  • Personal

Mark's family enjoys outdoor activities for all four seasons… skiing, surfing, hunting, hiking, and travel to new destinations, live sports events, and cooking meals together. He and his wife of 20 years spend a lot of time at their children's sporting events, which include football, competitive cheer, lacrosse, wrestling, and hockey.

  • SEMA Value That Best Describes Mark

    SMART

“The heavy civil construction market is complex and competitive. To be successful, you have to blend the right amount of strategy, ingenuity, planning, efficiency, and execution to the project at hand. If done properly, the outcome will have a lasting effect on a lot of people for many years to come.”
