SEMA broke ground on Segment Three of the Central Florida Expressway Authority's State Road 516 Lake/Orange Expressway Project in May of 2024.

SR 516’s project goals include:

  • Improve connectivity opportunities for Lake and Orange counties
  • Meet anticipated transportation demand for planned growth
  • Support economic viability/job creation for the Wellness Way Area Plan
  • Increase intermodal opportunities with Horizon West Town Center
  • Provide evacuation and emergency services access for emergency events such as hurricanes
  • Create a sustainable, environmentally friendly facility that balances transportation needs with conservation and energy efficiency

In a comment for an article in Florida's Observer, CFX executive director Michelle Maikisch noted that, "The Lake/Orange Expressway will be an example of what is possible when we think about transportation into the future. Innovation, technology and sustainable elements will make for more efficient and responsive transportation solutions."
