Vice President of Risk Management
SEMA Construction, Inc., named a Top Contractor by the Denver Post, is seeking a Vice President of Risk Management to join our team. This is a dynamic C-suite position for a privately-owned and rapidly growing heavy civil construction firm. The Vice President of Risk Management will lead SEMA’s corporate risk management department with heavy focus on risk identification, risk transfer, and risk retention techniques. The Vice President of Risk Management will provide oversight to SEMA’s well-established health and safety, contracts management, and human resources departments. The Vice President of Risk Management will work from SEMA’s corporate headquarters in Centennial, Colorado, however occasional travel to local and out-of-state jobsites will be required to effectively perform the duties of this position.
Specific job responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited, to the following:
- Designing and implementing corporate risk management programs and processes
- Performing operational risk assessments, including financial impact analyses should any risks occur
- Preparing thorough risk reports
- Monitoring all insurance policies & renewals
- Preparing and managing risk management and insurance budgets
- Developing business incident response plans
- Developing corporate risk mitigation plans and educational programs to limit risks and reduce incidents, training staff, and regularly communicating policies to increase risk awareness
- Proposing risk-mitigation measures and/or changes in policies to Corporate Executive Team if required
- Maintaining acute awareness of current industry risk policies and changes in regulations that impact the company
- Continuously reviewing contracts and business protocols to assess and mitigate risk
- Analyzing corporate health and safety program to assess risk
- Providing personnel management and “escalation ladder” function for SEMA’s health and safety, contracts management, and human resources departments
We understand few candidates will check all of the boxes below, therefore the selected candidate will possess the strongest hybrid of SEMA’s wish list of qualifications:
- J.D. from an accredited law school (licensed to practice in Colorado or Texas is preferred, but not required)
- Certification in Risk Management (ARM), preferred but not required
- 6+ years of experience in a law firm, corporate legal department, or corporate risk management department
- Superior interpersonal skills, proven ability to build cross-functional consensus, and effectively collaborate with multiple diverse stakeholders
- Understanding of a captive insurance program
- Experience implementing compliance and risk management programs
- Legal generalist experience preferred, including: construction contracts, casualty insurance, real estate, litigation and compliance
- Experience working with outside attorneys in case management
- Knowledge of heavy civil risk management
- Ability to identify legal issues associated with assigned tasks and to identify ethical issues in practice
- Ability to efficiently perform legal research
- Exceptional contract drafting, business writing, and verbal communication skills
- Flexibility to quickly adapt to changes in priorities
- Strong aptitude for translating complex legal issues into actionable recommendations that deliver business value
- Self-starter, results-oriented, driven to exceed goals
